Being a woman in a man’s world has become increasingly common, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. We spoke to one of these ladies, who has contributed greatly to the success at Sci-Fleet Hino.
Jade Morrison, Service Supervisor
Jade Morrison holds a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, and with her vast technical knowledge and sharp skills, she can give any man a run for his money.
How does it feel to work in a male-dominated industry?
I think it’s great. The technicians and apprentices I’ve worked with in the workshop have been incredibly accepting and understanding. I’ve worked with some great people, and I’m very lucky to have had some great mentors over the years that got me through my apprenticeship. It’s more common for women to take on trades nowadays than it was 30 years ago, and I think that’s a great thing.
What made you interested in working at Hino?
For years, I worked in various administration roles, which over time, became repetitive and boring. I was employed as a Service Advisor with Sci-Fleet Hino in Brisbane, and became curious about the mechanical work. I would watch the technicians, and they’d explain the repairs they were doing. I began working in the workshop, as a trade assistant in the afternoons/evenings, and was then offered a full time apprenticeship by Sci-Fleet Hino. I enjoyed the learning experience, it was definitely a challenge!
What is the best part of your job?
I enjoy talking to people from all walks of life and from various industries. I certainly hear some interesting stories! I have built some great relationships with my customers. Good communication is the key to a happy customer.
What practical advice do you have for maintaining a vehicle?
Performing a daily vehicle inspection ensures the safety and roadworthiness of your vehicle. It’s also an essential step in preventable maintenance, allowing you to identify any obvious faults with the vehicle. Tyre and rim condition, all fluid and oil levels (including windscreen washer fluid), mirrors, lights, air levels, fuel level and seatbelts should be included in the daily check. Also remember to drain your vehicle’s air tanks to remove any minor water accumulation.
What tips do you have for owner-drivers?
Always ensure that your vehicle’s maintenance is kept up to date and carried out at the recommended intervals specified in your warranty and service book. Your vehicle is your livelihood – regular maintenance ensures minimal downtime and less chance of an unexpected repair.
Also, invest in genuine parts! Although aftermarket parts are cheaper in price, their quality is usually substandard with very little warranty offered. Genuine Hino parts that are fitted by a Hino dealer come with a three year, unlimited kilometer warranty – it doesn’t really get much better than that.
What tips do you have for other women working in a man’s world?
Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. While completing my apprenticeship, I found, at times, that I struggled “strength-wise” compared to the other male technicians. Back then, It was hard for me to ask for help from the other technicians for fear of looking “like a girl”, but asking for help is actually a braver thing to do. And I was respected for it.
