APPRENTICESHIP: Realising your career potential

This past week marked National Apprenticeship Week; designed to highlight the important role apprenticeships play in building workforce skills, knowledge and their contribution to a robust economy. It also helps to raise awareness of the many advantages of undertaking apprenticeships and their importance to the future of Australia’s skilled workforce.

This year, the annual events theme is ‘Skills in motion’, symbolising the evolution of skills, knowledge, and expertise that apprentices develop as their career takes shape.

Apprenticeships are a powerful way to begin a satisfying and beneficial career. They allow you to gain hands-on experience, earn a salary and avoid student debt.  Whether you’re a school leaver, looking to change careers or even just upskilling, you’re opening the door to endless opportunities with a future primed for growth and stability.

So why should you consider an apprenticeship? Let’s take a look at the many reasons why this route could be the perfect fit for you.

  • Hands-On Learning

Apprenticeships are all about practical experience. Gaining practical and adaptive skills enables you to develop the technical knowledge needed for your trade while learning problem-solving, teamwork and adaptability.

  • Earning while you’re learning

As an apprentice, you earn a wage while also gaining valuable skills in the trade. This is especially appealing to people who want to avoid the student loan debt typically associated with traditional tertiary education, or prefer to start earning right away. As you improve your skills, your pay also typically increases.

  • Flexible learning

Part-time or full-time, you can do your apprenticeship in a way that suits you best. Apprenticeships offer flexible learning options, accommodating structured on-the-job training, off-the-job education, or a combination of both.

  • A pathway from school to work

Apprenticeships can be pursued straight out of Year 10, making them an ideal choice for school leavers or those who don’t wish to obtain a HSC. They also provide a pathway for individuals looking to upskill or retrain later in their careers.

  • Nationally recognised qualifications

Upon completion of your apprenticeship, you earn a nationally recognised qualification that can open doors to higher qualifications, including degree programs. Employers highly value this certification, knowing you’ve completed a structured program designed by industry experts.

  • Working with seasoned professionals

Apprenticeships aren’t just about training; they also come with mentorship. You'll be guided by experienced professionals who can share insights, give feedback, and provide support. In addition, you are also learning what employers expect from their employees in a environment (workplace etiquette).

  • Financial incentives & support

There are also various government incentives designed to encourage participation in priority apprenticeship qualifications. For example:

- Fee-free Apprenticeships and Traineeships: As an eligible apprentice, you can have your tuition costs covered by programs like Smart & Skilled

- Trade Support Loans: You can get up to $20,808 over 4 years to help cover living expenses while you train.

  • Job Security

A recent survey found that those who had apprenticeships or gained trainee qualifications had the highest employment rate, with 96% employed by the age of 25. This practical training offered in an apprenticeship not only enriches your skill set but also significantly enhances your employability, setting you apart in a competitive job market. Many apprentices go on to full-time roles with 90% staying on after their apprenticeship, and a significant number move ahead to start their own business. Some even become mentors and trainers themselves.

A good place to start

If you think an apprenticeship is a good option for you, then here are a few steps to get the ball rolling:

  1. Choose your industry - think about which trade or profession you could see yourself enjoying the most, be it transport, construction, engineering, electrical or any other skilled trade you’re interested in.
  2. Select a training provider - find apprenticeship programs through the likes of TAFE Trade Schools or government initiatives.
  3. Apply for an apprenticeship - get in touch with employers who are offering apprenticeship roles or you can apply through platforms like Apprenticeships Australia or MIGAS Apprentices & Trainees.
  4. Get financial support - find out if you’re eligible for fee-free training or trade support loans.
  5. Start working, start learning - get going with your apprenticeship, and begin to build your skills and career.

Additionally, resources like a jobs board and the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network can assist you in finding the right occupation and understanding the cost of your training.

Apprenticeships offer an exciting and effective alternative to traditional education routes. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a new direction, an apprenticeship can provide the experience, knowledge, and confidence to set you up for success.
