How to make your transport business run more efficiently

When you run a business, efficiency is the magic word. In the transport industry, being efficient has a lot to do with investing in your fleet and your drivers. The costs that deal with setting up a smooth running transport business might seem hefty, but in the long run, your investment will pay off.

Set up strong foundations for a strong business

Dedicate an expert team to manage compliance and safety, and have a risk management plan put in place. Also, be proactive about communicating your policies – supply each driver and each vehicle with a handbook. Create your own transportation management program based on your operations, and implement a standardised process that everyone understands – from executives to support staff. This will help to manage expectations, and make sure everyone’s on the same page.

Make smart investments in your hardware

A transport business can’t run on rusty equipment. Take initiative to invest in the latest technology and upgrade your vehicles. Invest in your fleet every five to seven years to ensure you receive better resale value and also take advantage of the latest technology and safety features. Regularly service your vehicle at an authorised dealer or if you have your own service centre, aim to buy only genuine parts. Don’t let the costs bring you down – you’re planning for this business to run for a long time, right? Then set up your gear to last just as long.

Remember the most important part – your people

All of this would come crashing down if your people aren’t set up to thrive. Firstly, use a standardised process to hire your drivers, and make sure it includes road tests and a pre-employment screening program. These tests can lower the rates of road accidents involving your fleet. Take care of your existing crew by staying current with management and training programs. Laws can change pretty often so make sure your team stays up-to-date on regulations. Last but not least, invest in your people’s health and happiness. Encourage exercise and wellness programs such as quitting smoking or weight control plans. In the long run, a healthy workforce means an efficient, productive day.
