Dylan Diehl, Service Winner of the 2024 Skills Contest
As excitement builds for this Thursday’s 2025 Hino National Skills Contest, Prestige Hino is taking a moment to reflect on one of the most remarkable achievements in the event’s history.
Last year, the dealership made history by claiming all three national titles - Parts, Service, and Sales - marking the first time a single dealership had ever achieved a complete sweep. The champions behind this record-breaking success were Michael Greenhill (Parts), Dylan Diehl (Service), and Brad Rawle (Sales).
Now, as the next round of competitors prepare to put their knowledge and skills to the test in 2025, we caught up with last years winners to reflect on their roles, their journeys with Hino, and what the Skills Contest means to them.
Mastering the Art of Parts
Michael Greenhill’s journey into automotive parts began long before most of us knew what a turbocharger was. At just 14, he started working school holidays at a spare parts business in Narrabeen. Today, as Assistant Parts Manager, Michael does more than hand over components - he ensures customers get exactly what they need to maintain or repair their trucks.
“Product knowledge and knowing the customer’s needs - that’s what makes a good parts interpreter,” he explains. “Otherwise, you’re costing people time. If you're costing a business money, the easiest thing for them to do is go elsewhere. The parts department plays a crucial role in retention.”
His role demands a blend of problem-solving, commercial awareness, and technical expertise - all tested in the Hino National Skills Contest. The competition tests not only technical expertise but also the ability to think critically under pressure, mirroring the real-life demands of a busy parts department. Michael has competed in the contest before, placing third in 2019, before ultimately winning the Parts title last year. “It’s a nice recognition of all the work I’ve put in over the last 10 or 12 years with the brand” he notes.
From Apprentice to Foreman
Dylan Diehl started at Prestige Hino over eight years ago as an apprentice. Since then, he has qualified as an auto electrician and now works as foreman, leading the service team while tackling complex diagnostics himself.
“I like that it's something different every day, and actually having to come in and think. I like problem solving.” Dylan emphasises the growth opportunities within the industry and Hino and as a brand. “There’s so much room for development, whether you want to start on the tools and work your way up to management or you can work your way across… to fleet manager or workshop manager or anything like that.”
Having competed in the Hino National Skills Contest more than once, Dylan appreciates both the challenge and the learning opportunities it offers. “It was my second time. I just tried to have a bit more of a relaxed approach this time. I was still nervous, but I suppose I'd seen all the guys before and knew what to expect with it, too.”
He credits his preparation to his training, including the Hino Master Technician and in-house courses. “You can pick up the expectations through there. I did four courses last year. It definitely paid off.”
Turning Knowledge into Trust
For Brad Rawle, winning the Sales title was the culmination of years of customer-focused experience and a deep understanding of the Hino brand. “My main goal is to obviously sell and facilitate new trucks to customers… really building a truck around their needs to make sure that it is the correct performing vehicle and they're happy.”
For Brad, success in sales comes down to confidence, communication, and connection. “You have to be confident, a people’s person… and open to learning about the product - you don’t want to sell the wrong thing to the wrong person.”
While the dealership’s clean sweep during the 2024 Skills Contest was a team triumph, for Brad, the win also carried a personal sense of accomplishment. The recognition reaffirmed his progress in the industry and the knowledge he’s built along the way. “I’ve only been in the truck industry five or six years. So, it’s nice to know that I’ve come in and I have developed enough to win something like this.”
Winning alongside his colleagues’ victories in Parts and Service made the achievement even more rewarding. “It did feel really goodhaving the other two boys win Parts and Service as well, it was a bit special.”
Setting the Standard for 2025
Together, Michael, Dylan, and Brad represent the full spectrum of expertise at Prestige Hino. Their 2024 sweep was more than just a victory - it was a statement about teamwork, dedication, and excellence across every facet of the business.
Brad hopes others take the opportunity to test themselves and grow through the contest. “It's one of the most beneficial things I've done with Hino… it does build confidence and you do learn from the other people there.”
The Hino National Skills Contest is about more than competition - it celebrates the talent, skill, and commitment that drive the Hino dealer network.
